Left Bank Cinema: PINA
July 27 @ 7:30 pm - 11:00 pm£4 - £5
The film ‘Pina’ was first conceived as a collaboration with the famous choreographer Pina Bausch, but she died unexpectedly while it was still being planned, and so over time the project evolved into a celebration of her life and work.
Her pioneering style of ‘dance theatre’ is given a thorough examination in this beautiful documentary, which is complete with extracts from performances some of her best known pieces. Many of these are shot in stunning outdoor locations, including one piece performed on a hanging monorail in Wuppertal.
Wim Wenders also filmed many interviews and rehearsals with the dancers of the Tanztheater Wuppertal, during which we find out more about her rigorous process and enduring influence.
“Pina was like finding a language, finally. Before, I didn’t know how to talk.”
The film was released in 2009 and has rarely be screened since.
