Left Bank Opera Festival
August 29 - August 31
Northern Opera Group presents a three day opera festival that celebrates the art of the ‘Great British Opera’ in the magnificent surroundings of Left Bank Leeds. Northern Opera Group and Aspect Opera will thrill audiences with their performances of ‘Alfred’ by Thomas Arne and ‘Albert Herring’ by Benjamin Britten.
LEFT BANK OPERA FESTIVAL
Prepare to be swept away this August by two fully staged opera performances alongside other daytime events at Left Bank Leeds. This festival, curated by Northern Opera Group, promises to captivate, enchant and educate. Set to become an annual event, don’t miss the inaugural Left Bank Opera Festival.
OPERA 1: ALFRED, BY THOMAS ARNE
29 & 30 AUGUST, 7:30 – 9PM
Battered and at the point of defeat to the marauding Danish forces, King Alfred’s (and the country’s) only hope now rests with one man – the King’s young son, Prince Edward.
A thrilling opera of love, pride, and honour, ‘Alfred’ is one of the greatest British operas of all time. Performed by a leading cast and orchestra, don’t miss this rare opportunity to experience Thomas Arne’s work. This is a Northern Opera Group new production premiere.
OPERA 2: ALBERT HERRING, BY BENJAMIN BRITTEN
31 AUGUST, 7 – 10PM
In picture postcard middle England, the village elders can’t find a morally inscrutable May Queen to crown their May Day activities – until they come upon the novel idea of instead appointing a May King, the seemingly innocent Albert Herring. The perfect companion to ‘Alfred’, ‘Albert Herring’ is a joyous (and slightly satirical) celebration of quaint English village life. Performed by Aspect Opera.
Tickets are available online for £17.50 (book both operas for only £30). www.northernoperagroup.co.uk
