They Will Have to Kill Us First: Malian Music in Exile
Johanna Schwartz / 2015 / 1hr 45 min / UK

Doors 7.30pm | Screening 8pm

When lslamic extremists banned music in Mali, the country’s radio stations were destroyed, instruments were burned and revered musicians faced torture, even death. Many fled for their lives. Yet music is the beating heart of Malian culture and this film demonstrates the courage and resilience of its musicians who wouldn’t give up without a fight. Those providing a commentary on the situation for the film include Damon Albarn, Brian Eno and Nick Zinner from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and the film is packed with music by a variety of Mailan artists, including Khaira Arby, Fadimata ‘Disco’ Walet Oumar, Songhoy Blues and Moussa Sidi.

A special screening of a timely film about culture and conflict, raising funds for the charity Music in Exile.
