‘Much Ado About Nothing’ by Charles Villiers Stanford
August 4, 2016 @ 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm
Join us as we rediscover Charles Villiers Stanford’s wonderful operatic adaptation of Shakespeare’s ‘Much Ado About Nothing’.
Largely unperformed since its premiere at the Royal Opera House in 1901, Stanford’s opera is a hilarious, moving and hugely entertaining adaptation of Shakespeare’s play. In a comedy of two sets of lovers, Hero and Claudio must overcome the devious and jealous Don John, whilst for Beatrice and Benedick, it’s not exactly a case of ‘love at first sight’…
Joining director Eleanor Clare Taylor and conductor Christopher Pelly, will be five exceptional young singers who will bring extended excerpts of the opera to life. We’ll also be joined by the leading Stanford scholar, Professor Jeremy Dibble, who will provide some context on the opera and Stanford’s operatic career.
The evening will also feature short excerpts from Northern Opera Group’s 2016 Christmas opera, Pauline Viardot’s ‘Cinderella’, and opportunity to learn more about the Company’s plans for 2017 and beyond. Tickets are only £10 for this unique opportunity to hear Stanford’s glorious opera performed by leading young musicians.
This evening is supported by the Stanford Society and Shackleford Pianos.
