Panel Discussion: Album Covers & Art
September 6, 2018 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pmFree
Inspired by Damon Roberts’ music-influenced exhibition in the Porch Gallery, we’ve brought together a panel of Leeds musicians and designers to share, discuss, debate and answer your questions around what makes a truly great record sleeve.
This event will be hosted by Chris Madden (from Chinwag) who will be leading the chat and delving into the worlds of music and art.
On the panel:
Chris Madden is a Leeds-based Counselling Psychotherapist. He is a trustee with MAP Charity who work with young people at risk of exclusion from mainstream education. He also hosts Chinwag, a chat about life and whatever else comes up, an awareness/fundraiser event for MAP. He loves the art of the LP sleeve!
Jonny Wilkinson is known under various different monikers including JW, as the guitarist in Hookworms, and Idiot’s Pasture, as an illustrator and designer. He was born, grew up and currently resides in Halifax, West Yorkshire and found his feet within the Leeds music community during his time studying at Leeds College of Art. Jonny has previously worked closely with Brudenell Social Club to produce posters and prints. Jonny created the artwork for the first two Hookworms LPs as well as early limited releases and has worked on artwork for other independent musicians and labels including: Cowtown, The Orielles, XAM Duo, Slowcoaches and Faux Discx
Adam Gillison, manager of Jumbo Records:
Jumbo Records has been a record shop in Leeds for 47 years, and I have been there for over 20 of them. We are an independent shop with close ties to the local music scene, its bands, its venues and its culture. As a seller of vinyl records and CDs of almost all genres of music we are hopefully well- placed to have an opinion on the artwork that appears on them.
Drew Millward was born in 1981 in Coventry; he grew up in Bolton, studied and lived in Leeds for many years and now lives in a quarry in the Aire Valley. He has been drawing pictures since around 2004. Drew likes to draw ‘the old fashioned way’, using pencils, pens and a love of the craft of illustration. While his subject matter can vary dramatically, he hopes that the attention to detail and the love of drawing is apparent throughout his work.
He has exhibited throughout the US, UK, Europe and beyond, as well as having the pleasure of creating work for an ever-growing international client base.
The Leaf Label is an independent record label based in Yorkshire, United Kingdom. Initially known as an electronic music label, releasing mainly instrumental music, the company’s approach has broadened over the last few years and now features an eclectic range of artists, with a focus on strong live performers.
We’d love to see your favourite album cover – tell us what it is when you book your ticket and we’ll add it to the mix for the discussion.
Discussion starts at 7:30pm All event donations will support the development of Left Bank Leeds Charitable Trust, charity no. 1146734.
