We love Zac Rossiter’s incredible illustrations — capturing some of our favourite spots in Leeds and beyond. Zac’s brought his work to a few of our markets over the past year and a half; he’ll be joining us at Friday’s Night market alongside a host of amazing makers.
We spoke to Zac about his work and why he loves sharing it with all of us at markets!
Hey Zac! Can you tell us about your illustrations and how it all began?
I’ve always known I wanted to be an artist, and have been creating since around the age of 11! I’m from Lancashire originally, and studied at Leeds Art University.
I graduated in the midst of lockdown during 2020; I was living in Headingley and decided to stay. It was around the time we had the mandated, daily hour walk — so I began walking a mile radius around the area. I became inspired to start illustrating the places I saw – which I turned into prints and started selling through Etsy.
People began making requests or suggestions on what I should paint around the city. It just blew up from there!
What’s been the reception to your work?
It’s been amazing to see how people have different connections, or memories, to different places around the city. The anecdotes have begun to pile up — which is one of my favourite things about the work that I create.
I’ve learned so much about the places I paint; I think it’s important to celebrate the place you live, too.
You’ve been a regular at Left Bank makers markets. What’s your connection to the space?
My first market here was in the Summer. Left Bank was actually the first place in Leeds I ever visited, back when I was a child. My sister hosted a fashion show here — and my student University ball was here too. I already had great memories connected to the space, but it’s definitely one of the best markets I’ve been part of in Leeds. It’s such a great mix of people, and I love the casual nature of it. People come and check out stalls, sit down for a beer, come and talk to the traders. I love the openness around it.
Thanks Zac!
