With The Right Royal Weekender at Left Bank just a month away, we’ve spoken to some of the awesome acts and creative talent in the lineup. Rev Chunky is hosting a not-to-be missed Sunday eve for us, joined by The Soul Coalition and some very special guests.
We called him up to chat about what he’s got planned.
Hey Rev Chunky! Can you tell us a bit about your experience of music?
Music has played a lot of different roles in my life. I grew up in a musical family; my mum and dad played guitar, piano and sang at church, as did my two older brothers and a younger sister that played too. There was always music in our home.
What I understood from Gospel music was how uplifting it was — but also how sacred. There’s different songs for different times and occasions. We have this period called testimony service, which allows people to get up and express how they feel or share whatever they were experiencing that week. In-between, were choruses we got to play, which as a kid I found really exciting. Growing up, my mum also suffered terribly with her mental health; I saw the amazing effect that music would have on her and the transformative and uplifting power that it can have on everyone.
I played in a rock band at school, I played in a reggae band in my local community.I’ve played in church bands and a blues band. I also busk in the street — so I have areal regard for sharing the joy of music with other people.
We can’t wait until your event.
It’s all about celebration. We’ve got some amazing talent coming, friends and peopleI’ve shared the stage with before. We’ll be playing some uplifting soul anthems; songs and choruses that everyone can join in singing. The idea behind it is that everyone can join in. There’s no partiality or division here, it’s about the love of what we do and using music to bring everyone together.
What else can we expect?
An uplifting musical experience. I think with everything that’s going on in the world, especially the past few years, it’s important to have people come together to celebrate the soul of humanity and love and brotherhood.
We can celebrate, through music. Even in dark, despairing times there’s joy to be found in it.
